Company Overview

GPI began in 1989 as a small proprietorship trading food products and medium-grade Carrageenan to blenders in Canada.  We grew rapidly to become a business that provided specialized Carrageenan to meat processing clients in the Americas and Europe, whom we supported with technical assistance.  The company – comprising a small, dedicated and highly capable team at the time - was incorporated in 1992.
 

To meet our clients’ increasingly complex needs, we expanded our business operations in order to innovate beyond what was traditionally available in the market.  In 1998, we established our first seaweed processing plant through a joint-venture in Indonesia.  This was followed in 2000 with a wholly-owned seaweed chip processing facility in the Philippines, supported in 2001 by a powder processing facility in Ontario, Canada utilizing proprietary technology. These integrated operations enabled GPI to produce uniquely functional Carrageenan sought by our customers, who by then had grown to become highly diverse and global in nature.  Our technologies gained greater traction as the competitive differentiators for our customers and they in turn became more ready to explore new ideas and processes with us.
 

In response to market demands for more functional and specialized technical improvements, we set up a full Research and Development Centre in Ontario in 2005.  It features a complete pilot plant for meat, dairy, bakery, and beverage applications supported by a state-of-the-art laboratory complete with analytical equipment such as gas chromatography, texture analyzers, and infrared spectroscopy.  Our proficient R&D team augments their capabilities by working with the University of Guelph and Guelph Food Technology Centre (GFTC) as well as universities in the U.S., U.K., and China.  As a result, numerous new and natural ingredient technologies were and continue to be created and patented.
 

With a robust infrastructure and a  global network of distributors supporting our business, GPI today provides a breadth of technologies for a wide range of industries.  Our spirit of innovation, dedicated technical customer service and attention to quality generate multi-dimensional value for our clients.  In all that we do, we believe the key ingredient to our accelerated growth is in understanding our customers’ needs – this generates the synergy that fuels innovation and leads to mutual success.

Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Gary Goodyear, and Newmarket Member of Parliament, Ms. Lois Brown, toured our facility in July 2010. 

They sampled three different products made with our ingredients: Carrageenan, GPI TenderMeat and GPI Mulled Vinegar.
